Urashima Taro
Urashima Taro is a highly visual solo piece about power, seduction
and death, with a twisted sense of humour. It is based on one of Japan’s
oldest myths. It fuses exquisite Bunraku-style puppetry with acting,
shadow puppetry, video projection and Kamishibai (a traditional Japanese
form of paper theatre which can be seen as the origin of Manga). Yet
Urashima Taro is eminently contemporary. It transcends both Japanese
traditions and Western modernity by developing a unique form of performance.
Solo artist Aya Nakamura reveals a world based on duality; she is
simultaneously actress and puppeteer, manipulator and manipulated,
shadow and light, visible and invisible. Urashima Taro is set on the
borders between animated and inanimate, time and eternity. It is a
waking dream that stirs the imagination and transforms matter into
flesh.
